Rosenthal has gone 14-for-17 in save situations this season, but he has an ugly 5.63 ERA with a 36/21 K/BB ratio in 24 innings. The month of June in particular has been tough for him as he has allowed runs in five of 11 appearances.
Matheny hasn’t announced a new official closer, so Seung Hwan Oh, Kevin Siegrist, and Jonathan Broxton could all find themselves in the mix for saves going forward.
Rosenthal had been reliable in the ninth inning since becoming the club’s closer in 2014. He saved 45 games with a 3.20 ERA in ’14, then improved that to 48 saves and a 2.10 ERA last year.
