Once Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Zach Davies got going, the Arizona Diamondbacks did not have much of a chance. Davies pitched six and a third effective innings; Hernan Perez hit a two-run homer, singled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth; and the Brewers beat the Diamondbacks, 6-4, on Thursday. Davies is now 3-0 with a 1.71 E.R.A. with four walks and 17 strikeouts in four starts in July.
“When he gets into a groove, he runs through the lineup pretty good,” Brewers Manager Craig Counsell said.
Davies got crucial run support from Perez, who started at shortstop for the benched Jonathan Villar. Perez crushed Robbie Ray’s first pitch 458 feet off the facing of the scoreboard in deep center for the two-run homer in the third.
Davies (8-4) allowed three runs — two earned — on six hits. Facing the Diamondbacks for the first time, he walked one and struck out five.
Around the Majors Aledmys Diaz homered, doubled and drove in three runs against his childhood pal Jose Fernandez, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the host Miami Marlins, 5-4. Miami’s Dee Gordon, the 2015 N.L. batting and stolen-base champion, returned from an 80-game suspension for failing a drug test and went 0 for 4. • The rookie Max Kepler continued his midseason surge with a game-tying home run among two hits and two R.B.I. as the host Minnesota Twins rallied to beat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-2. • Aaron Altherr and Maikel Franco homered, Aaron Nola won for the first time in eight starts, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Braves, 7-5, in Atlanta. Altherr returned after missing the first 103 games of the season with a broken left wrist. He went 3 for 4 with two R.B.I. • The San Francisco Giants acquired the All-Star infielder Eduardo Nunez from the Twins in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

Vikings Eagerly Extend Coach’s Contract
The Minnesota Vikings have given Coach Mike Zimmer a contract extension as he opens his third training camp with the team.
General Manager Rick Spielman declined to disclose the terms of the deal as the Vikings reported to Minnesota State University, Mankato, but Zimmer’s original contract was not close to expiring. Zimmer, 60, even said he had seen no rush to address it.
Spielman, though, said the Vikings were eager to build on the buzz surrounding the organization this summer with the opening of U.S. Bank Stadium and the return of a team that went 11-5 in the past regular season and won the N.F.C. North in Zimmer’s second year on the sideline.
Zimmer is 18-14, with one loss in the playoffs.

Nyquist Set to Face Exaggerator in Haskell
Nyquist will take on five challengers in the $1 million Haskell Invitational on Sunday at Monmouth Park in his first start since the Preakness, his only loss, more than two months ago.
Nyquist, the Kentucky Derby winner, is the 6-to-5 morning-line favorite for the mile-and-an-eighth Haskell over a field that includes Exaggerator, who spoiled Nyquist’s 8-0 record in the Preakness.
“We’re coming into the race with a lot of optimism,” Nyquist’s trainer, Doug O’Neill, said at Thursday’s post-position draw at the track in Oceanport, N.J. “Hopefully, he brings one of his better races, because he will need that to win.”
Nyquist breaks from the inside No. 1 post under Mario Gutierrez, while Exaggerator is the 5-to-2 second choice and leaves from the No. 6 post under Kent Desormeaux.
The rest of the Haskell field is American Freedom (3 to 1), Gun Runner (4 to 1), Awesome Slew (15 to 1) and Sunny Ridge (20 to 1).
